Lincoln's Steep Hill Wins Best UK Street AWARD

Steep Hill in Lincoln has been named the best street in Britain by the Academy of Urbanism.
The street has won the title of 2012 Great Street at Friday afternoon’s Urbanism Awards, which recognises the best, most enduring or most improved urban environments.
The event is run by The Academy of Urbanism, whose members include industry-leading architects, planners, engineers, developers and designers.
During a visit to Lincoln, assessors from the Academy of Urbanism took on the challenge of climbing Steep Hill, which has a one in seven gradient.
Hosts from the City of Lincoln Council and Lincoln BIG took the assessors on a tour of the street, which forms part of the Roman route from the River Witham to Bailgate and is home to two Norman houses – the Jew’s House and Norman House.
Dating to Roman times as a connection between the Castle and town, Steep Hill is a narrow street characterised by its impressive gradient.
The street plays host to a variety of independent and entrepreneurial retail outlets, combined with events and entertainment to make this a welcoming and important destination regionally.
Kevin Murray, Chairman of The Academy of Urbanism, said: “Rising and turning gently as a connection between the city centre and Cathedral, Steep Hill has an immense historical quality.
“But it is not a place relying on its past for its future. Through the City Council, a Business Improvement Group is energetically working with local business and residents allowing the street to respond to the changing economic and social pressures of today.
“The Academy believes this care for our historic urban fabric whilst looking to the future should be recognised and rewarded,” Murray added.
Matt Corrigan, Chief Executive of Lincoln BIG, said: “This is brilliant news, Steep Hill is a really special place, and Lincoln BIG is delighted that its unique charm has been recognised this way.
“I think it makes us all realise that it’s not just one of Lincoln’s but one of the county’s unique and special places.
“For visitors, going up the hill is not a chore – it’s part of Lincoln’s charm, and is a special experience that rivals anything that any other world-class historic place can offer.”
City Councillor Neil Murray said: “We’re delighted that Steep Hill has been given the Great Street Award, and that the Academy of Urbanism recognised what a fantastic, unique place it is.
“It was great to show Steep Hill to the assessors, and I’d like to thank everyone who submitted photos – proving how passionate people are about it.”
The other winners were: European City of the Year – Lisbon, Portugal; The Great Town Award – Derry~Londonderry, Northern Ireland; The Great Neighbourhood of the Year – Old Town / Harbour, Margate; and The Great Place of the Year – Victoria Quarter, Leeds.

The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight

Magnificent Second World War planes can occasionally be spotted in the skies above Lincolnshire - but have you seen them up close?
If not, why not make a note of two special open weekends when you can do just that!
The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF), based at RAF Coningsby, operates a Lancaster, five Spitfires, two Hurricanes, two Chipmunks and a Dakota.
Together, the planes, which perform regularly at airshows such as Waddington form a living tribute to all the RAF crew who gave their lives in the Second World War.
At the BBMF, Lincolnshire County Council runs a visitor centre featuring a permanent gallery, temporary exhibition space and shop.
To see the aircraft up close, visitors can also pay for a guided tour of the hangar where they are maintained by the RAF.
The BBMF is open Monday to Friday throughout the year (except bank holidays and Christmas), and on special summer open weekends, including Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st July and Monday 29th August.
Opening times are 10am to 5pm
Hangar tours from 10.30am to 3.30pm

Grapevine Event at Lincoln Show Grou

Grapevine is an event voicing a strong proclamation that the Church is alive and thriving and seeking to have a growing influence for good in this nation.
Grapevine provides an opportunity for Christians from all backgrounds and denominations to gather to celebrate the Christian faith and for the Ground Level family of Churches to have an annual focus which assists in equipping each local Church for the great commission.
In this 30th year of Grapevine, we want to celebrate all the good things that God has done through the years. Three decades have been interlaced with surprising and unexpected meetings with God. These 'encounter' times have created great memories but have also positioned us for active involvement in the years ahead. As we move forward, the words of Moses have prophetic importance: "If Your presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here".
We need the distinguishing mark of God's presence. Sometimes fire, sometimes wind and sometimes a still small voice. Often unexpected and always undeserved.
Let's press forward for more!

History Of Lincoln

Just wanted you to get the link to this short video about Lincoln and The Strait with a history of the many buildings that line Steep Hill!

The Lancaster Bomber

Special VIP days at East Kirkby are usually held on a Wednesday and are a whole day experience. The day starts at 9.30am with a briefing from either your pilot or/and a crew member and the day's co-ordinator. There are two tail down taxy runs on our VIP days one at 11am and the other at 1.30pm and places are limited to 18/20 people enjoying a taxy ride per VIP day. The 20 riders in the VIP party are divided into two groups with 10 on the 11am run and 10 on the 1.30pm run. The benefit of there being two taxy runs is that you ride on one and watch the other at close quarters. The taxy ride is completely unique and very different to the experience from outside the aircraft.

There is a lunch prepared especially for our VIP guests at 12 Noon. You can eat alongside the pilot and Lancaster ground crew providing you with another opportunity to ask them any technical questions and time to talk Lancasters! The VIP option offers you much longer inside the aircraft, boarding approx half an hour before your taxy run for your look around the first half of the aircraft, we also give you plenty of time after the run for you to complete your tour of the other half. All guests have the opportunity to sit in/visit each position throughout the aircraft whilst the aircraft is static and have the tour of the cockpit with the chance to sit in the pilot's seat. Whilst you are looking around the aircraft we have crew members on board to answer any questions you may have. Morning coffee, afternoon tea and homemade cake are also included on these days.

Guest option
There is also the chance for the person enjoying the taxy ride to bring a guest who gets the whole day, including a look inside the Lancaster and tour of the cockpit, but not the taxy ride for £70.00. The VIP day is run in a far more leisurely manner, providing you with time to absorb the airfield's history and sounds. Again all guests go home with a certificate signed by the pilot who has done the taxy run that day.

Price- £285.00 Places MUST be pre-booked!
